The Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation (FLHCF) is a non-profit volunteer awareness independent, community-suported charitable organization dedicated to the eradication of cancer in the Mississippi Delta through education, support services research and advocacy. The Foundation honors the memory of Ruleville native Fannie Lou Hamer who “shook the foundation of this Nation” with her courage, determination and willingness to undergo great personal sacrifices as an authentic voice of those who were impoverished and disfranchised.The Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation is committed to preventing cancer in the Mississippi Delta by increasing awareness and establishing a public agenda for the prevention of cancer.
The Mission
The Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation (FLHCF) is a volunteer awareness independent, community-supported charitable organization dedicated to the eradication of cancer in the Mississippi Delta through education, support services, research and advocacy. The Foundation honors the memory of Ruleville native Fannie Lou Hamer who “shook the foundation of this Nation” with her courage, determination and willingness to undergo great personal sacrifice as an authentic voice of those who were impoverished and disfranchised.
The Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation is Committed to Preventing cancer and suffering from cancer by:
- Increasing awareness of cancer risk factor;
- Enhancing the quality of life of those affected by cancer; and
- Establishing a public agenda for the prevention, detection, treatment and cure of cancer in Mississippi, particularly among residents of the Mississippi Delta, and underserved populations in other locations.
The objectives of the Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation (FLHCF) shall include the following:
- Adoption of a cancer awareness / education curriculum and/or program for training personnel to present information to underserved populations;
- Coordination of services and cancer awareness activities and cancer prevention, detection and treatment services with other health and / or community partners;
- Establishment of a cancer resource enter which focuses on underserved populations
- Influencing local, state and federal policymakers to increase public investment in quality healthcare and cancer care;
- Engagement in and support of cancer research designed to address cancer disparities among African Americans;
- Use of the media and other public relations outlets to promote the benefits of early detection and treatment; and
- Provision of critical financial assistance to those in need of cancer treatment and /or services.
